SHAHEEN: MANCHESTER JOB CORPS CENTER ANOTHER STEP CLOSER TO CONSTRUCTION

(Washington, DC) -  U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) announced today that the U.S. Department of Labor has begun the process of pre-soliciting qualified small business general contractors to construct a new jobs center in Manchester, New Hampshire. The pre-solicitation is now available at FedBizOpps.Gov

“Today’s news is a step in the right direction towards the construction and opening of the Jobs Corps Center in New Hampshire,” Shaheen said. “At a time when too many New Hampshire citizens struggle to find work, the Job Corps Center is crucial to equipping our young workers with the skills needed to enter high-growth industries and compete in the global marketplace.”

Shaheen applauded the U.S. Department of Labor’s decision this August to proceed with the construction of the Manchester center. New Hampshire is currently one of two states without its own center. 

As Governor, Shaheen created the state’s first ever economic development plan and one of its key recommendations was pursuing a Job Corps Center.  Subsequently, Shaheen led the effort through her newly formed Workforce Opportunity Council to submit the proposal to the Department of Labor in 2001.

The new Job Corps Center will provide academic and career training to economically disadvantaged youth aged 16-24 years.  The residential education and job training facility will be focused on the fast-growing industries of homeland security, healthcare and hospitality.
