SHAHEEN HOSTS NEW HAMPSHIRE ECONOMISTS AT CAPITOL HILL ROUNDTABLE ON JOBS, ECONOMY

 (Washington, DC) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) welcomed two of New Hampshire’s top economists, Chancellor Ross Gittell of the Community College System of New Hampshire and Matthew Slaughter, Professor of Management at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, to Capitol Hill this morning for a roundtable discussion on the economy. The panel, hosted by the Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee, brought together economists and members of the academic community to discuss budget priorities and legislative efforts to create jobs and grow the economy.  

“Matt and Ross are two of New Hampshire’s top economists. Their expertise proved invaluable during this morning’s discussion on jobs and the economy,” said Shaheen. “The message they delivered was clear: we need a responsible budget and we need to make strategic investments in future generations of American workers. I’m going to keep advocating for those priorities because I agree those goals will help move our economy forward.”

Shaheen has been a staunch advocate for investments in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) educational opportunities that will help young people prepare for the high-tech jobs in the future.  This summer, Shaheen also celebrated the groundbreaking of the new Manchester Job Corps Center, a project she has worked on for over 15 years. The center will provide low-income New Hampshire youth with job training in manufacturing, construction, health care, homeland security, hospitality and information technology. Earlier this summer she also introduced bipartisan legislation with Mississippi Senator Thad Cochran that would help Americans find work through on-the-job training efforts.
