SHAHEEN REFILES INTERNET SALES TAX AMENDMENT TO PROTECT NEW HAMPSHIRE BUSINESSES
Amendment would exempt New Hampshire businesses from online sales tax legislation
(WASHINGTON, DC) – In a continued effort to protect non-sales tax states like New Hampshire from a potential Internet sales tax requirement, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) filed an amendment today to exempt businesses from states that do not impose sales taxes from having to collect sales taxes for other jurisdictions on online sales. Shaheen’s amendment to the tax extenders bill mirrors one she filed last year on the online sales tax bill.
“An internet sales tax for small businesses that do not currently have a sales tax infrastructure would be unduly burdensome,” Shaheen said. “Small businesses are the backbone of New Hampshire’s economy and we should be doing everything we can to sustain and promote them, not overloading them with red tape and more bureaucratic obstacles.”
Shaheen has been a vocal opponent of online sales tax legislation and last year wrote a letter to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, expressing her deep concern about online sales tax proposals. Shaheen is also cosponsoring an amendment proposed by U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) on the issue.
