SHAHEEN RESPONDS TO REPORTS THAT HARRIET TUBMAN WILL BE FEATURED ON THE $20

**Author of the Women on the Twenty Act & the Harriet Tubman Currency Tribute Act, also urges Treasury “to look at every possible option to expedite the release date” for the new twenty dollar bill announced today**

(Washington, DC)- U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), author of the Women on the Twenty Act and Harriet Tubman Currency Tribute Act of 2015, made the following statement after it was reported that the U.S. Department of the Treasury will feature the portrait of Harriet Tubman on the twenty dollar bill.

“This is an historic announcement and I’m thrilled that the many voices across the country calling for a woman to be prominently featured on our currency, were heard,” said Shaheen. “Harriet Tubman’s fight for equality and freedom embodies the American spirit and she deserves to be featured beside our founding fathers. Having a woman prominently on the face of the twenty will finally send a powerful message on our currency about the important role women have played in our nation’s history. Women have waited long enough, and I will urge the Treasury Department to look at every possible option to expedite the release date of this new bill.”

Last year, Senator Shaheen introduced the Women on the Twenty Act which would begin the process for putting a woman on the twenty dollar bill. After a nationwide online poll selected Harriet Tubman, Senator Shaheen introduced legislation to put a portrait of her on the twenty.
