SHAHEEN CALLS FOR NEW TRANSPORTATION BILL TO INCLUDE PROTECTIONS FOR RIGHTS OF MOTORCYCLE RIDERS

(WASHINGTON, DC) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) yesterday led a letter to Senators John Thune (R-ND) and Bill Nelson (D-FL), the Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, calling for them to include protections for the rights of motorcycle riders in the surface transportation authorization bill. Specifically, the letter calls for inclusion of language from the Stop Motorcycle Checkpoint Funding Act, which Senator Shaheen introduced in January.

The letter reads in part:

“We believe that motorcycle-only checkpoints unfairly target motorcyclists and are an inefficient use of federal safety grants. Language prohibiting Department of Transportation grants from being used for these purposes merits inclusion in the surface transportation reauthorization bill.”

Senator Shaheen was joined on the letter by her colleagues Senators Susan Collins (R-ME), Joe Manchin (D-WV), Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), Ron Johnson (R-WI), and Joni Ernst (R-IA). The letter can be found here.
