SHAHEEN FILES AMENDMENT TO INTERNET SALES TAX LEGISLATION
Shaheen’s Amendment Would Exempt Businesses from Non-Sales Tax States
(Washington, DC) - Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) today filed an amendment to the internet sales tax legislation that the Senate is considering this week. This amendment would exempt businesses from states that don’t impose sales taxes from having to collect sales taxes from other jurisdictions on their online sales. The full text of the amendment is attached.
“The Internet sales tax legislation that the Senate is considering this week is bad for New Hampshire small businesses and our country’s economy as a whole,” said Senator Shaheen. “I’m disappointed the bill is being fast-tracked by Senate leadership instead of going through the regular committee process. The result of that decision is a bad bill that will hurt jobs, small businesses, and our economy.”
“My amendment would exempt states like New Hampshire from this bill’s unnecessary red tape, bureaucracy, and economic consequences and I’m hopeful that the Senate will give it the consideration it deserves,” added Shaheen. “The bottom line is that the federal government shouldn’t force businesses in non-sales tax states to collect taxes for other jurisdictions and I will continue to seek opportunities to protect New Hampshire’s small businesses from this bill’s consequences.”
