ICYMI: Shaheen Participates in Morning Joe Panel Discussion on the Impact of the Dobbs Decision Ahead of the One Year Anniversary
During a MSNBC Morning Joe panel discussion moderated by Ali Vitali, Shaheen reflected on the devastating consequences of the 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization Supreme Court decision on reproductive freedoms.
(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) participated in a Morning Joe panel discussion conducted by Ali Vitali ahead of the June 24th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization that overturned Roe v. Wade. During the segment, Shaheen reflected on the devastating consequences of the Dobbs decision on American women’s reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy. She highlighted the immense challenges facing women service members stationed in states with abortion bans or restrictions. Shaheen spoke about the broad impact of how the Dobbs decision has enabled extreme Republican politicians across the country to pursue dangerous abortion bans, and also specifically addressed her leading effort to defend access to abortion for servicewomen and military families.
“We need to make sure that those women who are fighting for us all around the world get the same access to health care that the men who serve in the military get,” Shaheen told MSNBC as the panelists discussed the new barriers facing service members who seek reproductive health care services while serving our military.
Joining Shaheen on the panel were U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) and Amanda Zurawski, who courageously shared her personal story of seeking an abortion and is a plaintiff in the lawsuit challenging Texas’ abortion ban. Mia Renna, a veteran who bravely told her story in seeking an abortion participated in the panel as well, beside providers, Dr. Raegan McDonald-Mosley and Dr. Bhavik Kumar.
Earlier in the week, Shaheen participated in a press conference hosted by Senator Murray, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Democratic women lawmakers ahead of the June 24th anniversary. At the press conference, Shaheen underscored the need to pass her legislation – the Protecting Service Members and Military Families’ Access to Health Care Act – to codify the Pentagon’s policies that provides necessary leave for abortion and other reproductive health care services.
Shaheen is an unrelenting advocate for women’s reproductive rights. For years, Shaheen has fought to expand coverage of women’s reproductive health and successfully pushed an effort through Congress that was signed into law to ensure servicewomen have access to abortions in cases of rape or incest. Shaheen also leads policy priorities that invest in preventative care, including through her legislation to bring the cost of contraception for servicewomen and dependents in military families in line with coverage of the civilians they’re sworn to protect.
The segment appeared on MSNBC’s Morning Joe Friday morning and can be viewed here.
