New Hampshire Delegation Announces More than $12 Million to Help Local Organizations Combat Homelessness
(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) alongside U.S. Representatives Annie Kuster (NH-02) and Chris Pappas (NH-01), are welcoming $12,838,362 in federal grants for New Hampshire organizations that provide housing assistance and supportive services for people experiencing homelessness. This funding comes through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Continuum of Care (CoC) Program, which works with nonprofits, states and local governments to quickly rehouse homeless individuals, families and youth, as well as individuals fleeing domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking.
“No family in New Hampshire should live in fear that tomorrow they won’t have a roof over their head or a safe place to sleep,” said Senator Shaheen. “I’m proud to help announce this federal funding that will provide organizations, local governments and nonprofits that are on the frontlines of the state’s housing crisis with the resources to quickly ensure shelter and services are available to Granite Staters in need. New Hampshire’s Continuum of Care programs provide a coordinated response to housing instability and homelessness, and I’m looking forward to seeing these federal funds further this critical work.”
“Organizations across New Hampshire are doing incredible work to support individuals and families who struggle to find safe, affordable housing,” said Senator Hassan. “I am pleased to see more than $12 million in federal funding headed to New Hampshire to support transitional and permanent housing for vulnerable Granite State families.”
“We can and must do more to address the homeless crisis across New Hampshire and support our most vulnerable neighbors,” said Congresswoman Kuster. “These significant federal funds will go a long way for communities and organizations throughout our state to provide those in need with safe, stable housing and urgently needed resources. I will continue fighting to find long-term solutions to address homelessness in New Hampshire, expand access to affordable housing, and ensure no one is left in the cold this winter.”
“Housing is fundamental for an individual's health and wellbeing, and as we continue to face an extreme housing shortage, we must ensure Granite Staters in need have access to shelter and support,” said Congressman Pappas. “This funding will provide those on the frontlines of this crisis in New Hampshire, including our state and local governments and community partners, with the resources to support families and individuals experiencing homelessness. I’ll keep working to address the root causes of the housing crisis and support efforts to help people find safe and affordable housing.”
Senator Shaheen is a leader in the Senate working to combat homelessness and housing instability by helping to ensure Granite Staters have the resources they need to thrive. A Shaheen-led bipartisan bill to increase access to rural housing recently passed in the Senate. Shaheen has also introduced the Fighting Homelessness Through Services and Housing Act to help local governments reduce homelessness as well as bicameral bills that would help preserve and revitalize manufactured housing communities and protect the rights of residents of manufactured housing communities. As a senior member of the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee and Chair of the Commerce, Justice, Science Appropriations Subcommittee, Shaheen worked to include key provisions from her Strategy and Investment in Rural Housing Preservation Act in the FY 2024 Agriculture and Related Agencies Appropriations Act. Shaheen’s standalone legislation would ensure that hundreds of thousands of low-income tenants in rural areas are able to maintain access to safe and affordable housing. Shaheen also led the New Hampshire congressional delegation in securing more than $350 million in Emergency Rental Assistance Funds and $50 million in Homeowner Assistance Funds for the state.
