Sen. Jeanne Shaheen asks Congress to provide relief to farms after agricultural disasters
MANCHESTER, N.H. — On Wednesday, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-New Hampshire, called on Congress to provide relief to New Hampshire farmers after recent agricultural disasters.
“New Hampshire growers are estimated to be facing as much as $20 million in disaster related effects from these freeze events and this estimate does not even include the ongoing impacts to vegetable growers and foraged crops from flooding and excessive moisture,” Shaheen said.
Shaheen stressed this not only impacting businesses but effecting a long-standing New Hampshire tradition of apple picking.
She estimates Granite State farmers lost between 80 to 100% of their apple crops this year, and close to 100% of crops in peaches, pears, plums, blueberries, strawberries, grapes and cherries.
