MAINE, NH SENATORS CONGRATULATE PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD ON NAVY ENVIRONMENTAL AWARDS

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe (R-ME), Susan Collins (R-ME), Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) today congratulated workers at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for being recognized by the Navy for excellence in environmental stewardship.   The shipyard received the 2011 Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) and Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) Environmental Awards in recognition of its Environmental Restoration Program, which identifies and manages environmental clean-up sites at the yard.   The shipyard’s commander, Captain Bryant Fuller, and members of his team will be in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday for the award presentation. 

“This recognition is a testament to PNSY’s commitment to conservation of our natural resources,” said the Senators in a joint statement.  “The shipyard’s workers should be especially proud that they were able to make significant clean-up progress while simultaneously continuing their impressive record of performing maintenance work under budget and ahead of schedule.”

The CNO and SECNAV Environmental Awards programs recognize Navy and Marine Corps individuals, teams, ships, and installations for exceptional environmental stewardship.  Candidates are judged on five key criteria, including program management, orientation to mission, stakeholder interaction, transferability, and technical merit.
