U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) will visit the New Hampshire Food Bank to discuss efforts to fight hunger and protect the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) which provides critical nutrition assistance to nine percent of New Hampshire households. Shaheen will visit the Food Bank in Manchester at 11:20 a.m. on Friday, October 25. Shaheen is part of a Senate coalition opposing drastic cuts to SNAP that would prevent millions of children, seniors, and families from accessing nutritious food, including hundreds of thousands of low-income children from accessing school meals.
Shaheen will then meet with students at Pelham High School at 1:30 p.m. to meet Pelham High School’s FIRST (For Inspiration of Science and Technology) Robotics team, the Pelham Pythons, and promote educational investments in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) to help prepare students for the high-tech jobs that are an important part of New Hampshire’s future.
Later, Shaheen will visit a New Hampshire staple: Brookdale Fruit Farm in Hollis, NH at 3:15 p.m.to meet the seventh-generation family owners who are supporting the local food production that is critical to jobs in the state’s agriculture industry. The farm sells its produce to local supermarkets and directly to consumers at its farm stand. The agriculture industry contributes billions annually to the state’s economy and fed more than 75,000 people in 2010 alone.
