(Washington DC) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), the lead Democrat on the Commerce, Justice, Science Appropriations Subcommittee, pushed Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein on reports that President Trump is considering firing Special Counsel Robert Mueller during this morning’s subcommittee hearing to review the President’s FY2018 budget request for the Justice Department. During her first round of questioning, Shaheen squared off with Rosenstein asking whether he has seen evidence of “good cause” for the firing of Special Counsel Mueller. Rosenstein stated that he has seen “no evidence” of good cause. In response to Shaheen’s questioning, Rosenstein said that Special Counsel Mueller “will have the full independence he needs to conduct that investigation” into Russian interference in our election “appropriately.”
Attorney General Jeff Sessions was scheduled to appear before the committee this morning, however, he abruptly canceled his appearance for the second time in order to appear before the Senate Intelligence Committee and sent Rosenstein to testify on his behalf.
