Ranking Member Shaheen Statement After Release of SBA's 2014 Small Business Federal Procurement Scorecard
U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, released the following statement after the release of the 2014 Small Business Federal Procurement Scorecard:
“Contracting with the federal government represents an important opportunity for small businesses,” said Senator Jeanne Shaheen. “While we continue to make progress increasing small business contracting, there’s more that needs to be done, especially when it comes to women-owned small businesses and veteran-owned small businesses. We need to do all we can to support small business growth in New Hampshire and across the United States, because when small businesses succeed our economy succeeds. I will continue working to increase contracting opportunities for small businesses looking to sell to the federal government.”
Last year, Senator Shaheen’s legislation to increase women-owned small business contracting was included as part of the FY15 National Defense Authorization Act. In February, Shaheen and a group of Senators urged the Small Business Administration to expedite regulations to implement those provisions. The comment period for this proposed rule ends on June 30th.
According to this most recent scorecard, in fiscal year 2014 small businesses won nearly $91.1 billion in federal prime contracts, an increase of $8 billion from fiscal year 2013. Small businesses were awarded 24.99 percent of all Federal spending in 2014, almost two percentage points higher than the statutory 23 percent goal.
About the Small Business Federal Procurement Scorecard:
These statistics were announced by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) as a part of its annual Small Business Procurement Scorecard. SBA is required to report to the President and Congress on achievement by Federal agencies and departments of their annual procurement goals. The Small Business Procurement Scorecard provides an assessment of federal achievement in prime contracting and subcontracting to small businesses by the 24 Chief Financial Officers Act agencies. The scorecard also measures progress departments are making to ensure small business opportunities remain an integral part of their acquisition of goods and services to meet mission objectives.
