Senator Shaheen's Statement on Decision to Open All Military Combat Roles to Women

(Washington, DC)—U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, gave the following statement after Secretary of Defense Ash Carter announced that all military combat roles will now be open to women.

“Our servicewomen have proven time and time again that they are up to any task given to them,” said Shaheen. “Women across this country are answering the call of duty in ever-greater numbers and it’s important that no position be off-limits because of their gender. Today’s historic announcement is a recognition of the extraordinary service women are performing every day and an important milestone towards greater equality in our armed forces.”
