Senators Shaheen, Hassan Join Colleagues in Cosponsoring Resolution Stating Climate Change is Real, Caused by Humans, and Immediate Action is Necessary

Washington, DC– Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan this week joined in cosponsoring a resolution with the entire Democratic caucus stating that climate change is real, caused by humans, and that the United States and Congress need to take immediate action to address it. The Senators are calling on their Republican colleagues to affirm these basic facts and commit to taking real and immediate action to address climate change. 

“The effects of climate change impact us all and pose real and serious threats to future generations unless Congress takes action. Republican leadership in the Senate needs to stop ignoring the facts,” said Senator Shaheen. “This resolution reaffirms what scientific evidence has confirmed: climate change is real, it is caused by humans and we need to act. I urge Senate Republicans to side with science and support this resolution.”

“In New Hampshire, we are already seeing the harmful impacts of climate change, which threatens the health of our people, the safety of our communities, and the strength of our economy,” said Senator Hassan. “It is long past time for Washington Republicans to face the facts about climate change and join us in our efforts to tackle this threat head-on. This resolution is simple, and I hope our Republican colleagues join us in supporting it.”

This week, both Senators Shaheen and Hassan opposed the confirmation of former coal lobbyist Andrew Wheeler to serve as Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

JOINT RESOLUTION 

Calling on the United States and Congress to take immediate action to address the challenge of climate change. 

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, 

That it is the sense of Congress that—

(1) climate change is real;

(2) human activity during the last century is the dominant cause of the climate crisis; and

(3) the United States and Congress should take immediate action to address the challenge of climate change.
