SHAHEEN ANNOUNCES $16 MILLION FOR IMPROVEMENTS AT PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD
(Washington, D.C.) - U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen announced today the Department of the Navy will invest $16 million in construction and modernization work on Dry Dock No. 1 at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. The dry dock is one of three used for submarine engineering overhauls.
In a November 2010 letter to Jacob Lew, Director of the President's Office of Management and Budget, Senators Shaheen, Olympia Snowe, and Susan Collins expressed concern that the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard has had to rely on funding requests from individual members of Congress. Without such funds, the Senators wrote, "we will have serious concerns about the ability of the Navy's facilities to support efficient shipyard operations and to protect the safety, health and quality of life of the thousands of employees who work there every day."
"This is a wise investment in the continued efficiency and high-quality work of this vital facility," Senator Shaheen said. "This project is good news for our national security and for the workers at the shipyard who have proven their ability to perform."
