(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) today announced that she is recognizing Dr. Juliann Barrett, DO, President of the Medical Staff and Director of Out Patient Practices at Valley Regional Hospital, as her virtual guest for President Biden’s address to a joint session of Congress to highlight the incredible work health care workers have done on the frontlines of the COVID crisis to save lives and keep communities healthy. Dr. Barrett also serves as a Physician in the United States Army Reserves. Shaheen visited Valley Regional Hospital last month to thank the hospital’s health care workers for their efforts fighting the pandemic and encourage Granite Staters to get vaccinated and boosted.
“I’m honored to recognize Dr. Barrett as my guest to the President’s upcoming address to Congress. The health care workers at Valley Regional Hospital have delivered lifesaving care day and night over the last two years, and Dr. Barrett’s leadership has made her a bedrock of the community,” said Shaheen. “Throughout the pandemic, I’ve led bipartisan efforts to secure funding and support doctors and professionals to help them keep their doors open. We’re still not out of the woods of this pandemic yet, but we’re seeing glimmers of hope thanks to our health care workers and robust vaccination efforts across the Granite State. I look forward to hearing the President’s message to the American people tomorrow, and I’ll continue partnering with the administration to put this public health crisis behind us once and for all.”
Dr. Barrett released a video statement ahead of the President’s address, which you can view here.
Senator Shaheen has led efforts in Congress to secure critical funds to address the COVID crisis in New Hampshire, including joining a bipartisan push to fix discrepancies that caused small and rural states to receive significantly less funding for vaccines and testing than originally estimated. During negotiations surrounding the American Rescue Plan, Shaheen helped steer efforts to increase funding for the Provider Relief Fund (PRF) to ensure hospitals, nursing homes and other health care providers on the frontlines have the support they need to keep their doors open and continue to care for patients. In December, Shaheen welcomed more than $41 million through the PRF to support 262 health care providers who have experienced revenue losses and expenses related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Last month, Shaheen also welcomed an additional $11 million to 25 New Hampshire providers through the PRF as part of a $2 billion distribution nationwide.
