SHAHEEN, AYOTTE TO DISCUSS VA REFORM BILL IN MERRIMACK TOMORROW
Final legislation includes key provision to increase access to care for NH veterans
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) will join New Hampshire veterans in Merrimack tomorrow for a press event to highlight compromise legislation to reform the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) – and the provision they worked to include that will give New Hampshire veterans the option to seek care from a private provider if they live more than 20 miles from the nearest full-service VA hospital. The provision allows the vast majority of New Hampshire veterans to utilize non-VA health care providers should they choose to do so, potentially avoiding long drives and wait times for appointments. Shaheen and Ayotte will also discuss other major provisions in the bill – including stronger accountability measures that make it easier to fire VA officials for misconduct.
The House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly to pass the compromise bill on Wednesday, and the Senate is expected to vote on the measure as soon as today.
