SHAHEEN CALLS PARTISAN ZIKA PROPOSAL "OFFENSIVE" AND URGES REPUBLICAN LEADERSHIP TO RETRACT

Washington, DC -- U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) issued the following statement after being briefed on the substance of a Republican bicameral proposal, known as a "conference report," to respond to the spread of the Zika virus:

"Congress is woefully late in providing resources to address the spread of the Zika virus and by proposing a hyper partisan bill, Republican leadership have squandered valuable time," said Senator Shaheen. "The threat from the Zika virus is very real and should not be seen as an opportunity to rollback access to women's reproductive healthcare and pass other partisan provisions. This 'conference report' is offensive, and I urge Republican leadership to retract this proposal and work across the aisle to provide the desperately needed resources needed to mount our nation's response to the Zika virus."  ‎
