Shaheen Celebrates Opening of Senior Behavioral Health Unit at St. Joseph Hospital
(Nashua, NH) – Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) delivered remarks celebrating the opening of the Senior Behavioral Health Unit at St. Joseph Hospital in Nashua. Shaheen’s office helped the hospital expedite the opening of the new facility by coordinating with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. With 24 beds designed for adults aged 65 and older, the health unit will help respond to the mental and behavioral health needs of seniors living in Nashua and the Southern Tier and help to respond to New Hampshire’s ongoing mental health crisis. During the event, Shaheen was joined by hospital and local officials, including Nashua Mayor Jim Donchess, and received a virtual tour of the health unit.
“I was thrilled to be on hand this morning with the dedicated health care workers and administrators at St. Joseph to celebrate the opening of this critical new facility. As our state continues to grapple with a serious mental health crisis, expanding access to care for our most vulnerable populations, including seniors, has never been more important,” said Senator Shaheen. “When St. Joseph contacted my office regarding a bureaucratic hurdle they were experiencing that threatened to delay the opening of this unit, my office got to work to resolve the issue. I thank St. Joseph staff for all their hard work to get local seniors the mental health treatment and support they need and I will continue working to address this ongoing crisis.”
