The amendment to Iran sanctions legislation passed 98-2. The vote on final passage is expected tomorrow. During her remarks, Shaheen stressed the importance of punishing Russia for interfering in the 2016 presidential election and deterring future interference and aggression, worldwide. Shaheen urged her colleagues in both houses of Congress to approve the sanctions amendment and for the President “to join with us in a united front against Russia’s interference in our democracy.”

Shaheen was instrumental in urging Senate leadership to act on Russian sanctions legislation and was a key negotiator on the Russia sanctions. She has been an outspoken critic of President Putin’s authoritarian regime and was the first in Congress to call for hearings on Russian interference in the 2016 elections.
