(Washington, D.C.) U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) visited the U.S Coast Guard, Portsmouth Harbor Station today to meet with Rear Admiral Steve Poulin, Commander of the First Coast Guard District, and take an upriver tour of the Portsmouth Harbor and Piscataqua River aboard a U.S. Coast Guard Response Boat. While on-board the boat, Shaheen discussed updates within the First Coast Guard District and Sector Northern New England with Admiral Poulin and Captain Michael Baroody, Commander, Sector Northern New England.
Following the tour, Shaheen met with the crew of Portsmouth Harbor Station, thanking them for their service. In her remarks, Shaheen discussed the need for Congress to appropriate necessary resources for the U.S. Coast Guard to maintain and modernize their fleets to ensure they can carry out critical missions.
“Charged with protecting the homeland, search and rescue, environmental protection and looking out for America’s maritime interests, the Coast Guard has an immense mission. It’s critical that Congress provides the Coast Guard with the resources it needs to meet this challenge. I will continue to work across the aisle to make sure Congress adequately supports the Coast Guard,” said Shaheen. “Thank you to the entire Station Portsmouth Harbor team for your hospitality, and thank you for your service to our country. Excellence and professionalism are the trademarks of the United States Coast Guard. Those qualities are on vivid display here at Portsmouth Harbor Station.”
At the end of Shaheen’s visit, she presented the Admiral’s Command Coin alongside Admiral Poulin to two Portsmouth Harbor Station crew members, Petty Officers Michael Callinan and Jarrod Kushla.
