Shaheen Meets with Judge Merrick Garland, President Biden’s Nominee for U.S. Attorney General
(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, issued the following statement after meeting with Attorney General nominee Judge Merrick Garland:
“I appreciated the opportunity to meet with Judge Garland this morning, where we discussed pressing challenges facing our country that the Department of Justice will need to address with urgency and precision,” said Shaheen. “We discussed key priorities that I believe must be top concerns for our next Attorney General under the Biden Administration, including addressing the violent rise of domestic terrorism, turning the tide of the substance use disorder epidemic and strengthening protections for victims of domestic and sexual violence.”
Shaheen continued: “I was particularly pleased to hear his commitment to stabilizing deposits in the Crime Victims Fund to ensure that resources for crucial victim services programs are available, as well as his strong support for grants to bolster substance misuse programs. I am impressed by Judge Garland’s extensive legal career on the bench and as a practicing attorney. I also appreciated hearing his commitment to improving morale for career staff and restoring public trust in our institutions by centering the Department’s work in integrity and impartiality. I look forward to his consideration before the Senate in the near future.”
