Shaheen Statement After Voting Against the Nomination of Kirstjen Nielsen to Serve as DHS Secretary
(Washington, DC)—U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) issued the following statement on her opposition to the nomination of Kirstjen Nielsen to serve as Secretary of Homeland Security. Nielsen’s nomination was approved by a vote of 62 to 37:
“The Trump administration’s immigration policies have strayed significantly from our values as a nation,” said Senator Shaheen. “During her confirmation process, Ms. Nielsen did not provide sufficient assurances that she would lead towards a more sensible approach. The Department of Homeland Security should be using its resources to target criminals, not individuals who are productive members of our society.”
