Shaheen Statement Ahead of Roe v. Wade Anniversary

(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) issued the following statement ahead of the 49th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision:

“Today marks the 49th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the landmark decision that affirmed a woman’s Constitutional right to decide how and when to start her family. Roe was a historic victory for women, our bodies and our autonomy. But the survival of this nearly 50-year precedent is at stake as the Supreme Court considers a case that could undo all of our progress and turn back the clock on reproductive rights. This comes as we’re seeing sweeping attacks on women and their health across the country – including here in the Granite State. Let’s be clear: every day these laws are in effect, patients are in danger,” said Shaheen.

She continued: “The stakes are higher than ever, with the health and autonomy of women and families across the country hanging in the balance as Republicans work to methodically challenge and overturn Roe. It’s time to sound the alarm and make clear: decisions about our bodies, our health care and our future belong to us. This is a pivotal moment in American history. As we stand on the shoulders of generations of women who secured the protections under Roe, we must double down in our fight. We will not turn our backs on the health and wellbeing of generations of women. I’ll do everything in my power to ensure 2022 is not the last anniversary of Roe v. Wade.”
