Shaheen Statement Following Votes to Approve President Trump's Nominees to Serve as Secretary of Defense & Secretary of Homeland Security
(Washington, DC)— This evening, Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) gave the following remarks after voting to confirm Ret. General James Mattis to serve as secretary of defense, and Ret. General John Kelly to serve as secretary of homeland security.
“During General Mattis’s confirmation hearing, I very much appreciated his many insights on how best to strengthen our defense capabilities and respond to our adversaries,” said Shaheen. “I was especially encouraged by his strong statements in support of NATO, standing up to Russian aggression, and improving the readiness of the National Guard. I look forward to working with General Mattis, particularly to preserve the critical contributions of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and the Pease Air National Guard Base to our national security.”
“I’m pleased General Kelly will continue his distinguished career of service to our nation as secretary of homeland security,” said Shaheen. “He has demonstrated that he has an in-depth understanding of the many threats facing our country and I look forward to working closely with him to ensure the Department of Homeland Security has the resources and appropriate authority to address these threats.”
