SHAHEEN STATEMENT ON ANNIVERSARY OF ROE V. WADE DECISION

(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) released the following statement on the 42nd anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision:

“Women can and should be trusted to make medical decisions in consultation with their families and doctors, not the government or their employers. Roe v. Wade was a landmark decision that rightfully recognized that women should be in charge of their own reproductive health care decisions. On this anniversary, I am committed to fighting all attempts to roll back reproductive rights.”

Yesterday, Senator Shaheen announced she is co-sponsoring the Women’s Health Protection Act, legislation prohibiting efforts to limit access to reproductive health services including certain types of medication and birth control. Last year, Shaheen also helped bring health care equity to Peace Corps volunteers by giving victims of rape health care coverage to terminate a pregnancy. The provision is similar to the Shaheen Amendment which passed in 2013 and provides servicewomen coverage for abortions if they are victims of rape or incest.
