SHAHEEN STATEMENT ON AUTHORIZATION OF MILITARY FORCE AGAINST ISIS

(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) released the following statement on the Obama Administration’s request for an Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF) against ISIS:

“Congress has a solemn responsibility to our troops to ensure that any decision to send them into conflict is thoughtfully and thoroughly debated. The Administration’s decision to pursue a congressionally approved AUMF is long overdue, and debating and passing a narrowly-defined authorization of force is critical to strengthening our country’s fight against ISIS.

“The tragic death of Kayla Mueller and the cowardly murders of James Foley, Steven Sotloff and countless others underscore the necessity to confront and eliminate violent extremists wherever they exist. A new AUMF will help create the necessary framework for the long-term fight to destroy ISIS. An authorization of force is the best way forward and I expect a robust debate on the Administration’s proposal.”
