Shaheen Statement on CBO Assessment That Senate Republican Healthcare Repeal Bill Would Strip 22 Million Americans Of Their Insurance Coverage
(Washington, DC)— U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) released the following statement after the Congressional Budget Office released its assessment of the Senate Republican healthcare repeal bill:
“This report confirms that the health and wellbeing of millions of Americans, including tens of thousands of Granite Staters, is at stake,” said Shaheen. “This legislation was written entirely behind closed doors with no amendments or hearings. It’s hard to overstate the recklessness of President Trump and Republican leadership’s efforts to ram this bill through the Senate. It’s unconscionable that this legislation drastically drives up costs for middle and low income Americans while giving a massive tax break to the wealthy. It also reduces mental health and substance use treatment coverage as New Hampshire continues to battle the opioid epidemic, one of the worst public health emergencies in our state’s history. It’s time for Republican leadership in the Senate to listen to the pleas of Americans and Granite Staters whose care is in jeopardy, and begin working across the aisle to improve the existing law by expanding coverage and lowering costs.”
