SHAHEEN STATEMENT ON CHEMICAL WEAPONS FACILITIES IN SYRIA

U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) released the following statement upon reports indicating the Syrian regime of Bashar Assad has failed to declare facilities used for the production and storage of chemical weapons:

“Syria's failure to declare all of its chemical weapons facilities is simply unacceptable, and the international community must redouble its efforts to completely account for and eliminate Syria’s chemical weapons capability.

"More work remains to be done to dismantle Assad’s chemical weapons program, and the Administration and the international community must increase pressure on Syria to ensure the regime complies fully with its international obligations. While all of Syria’s declared chemical weapons have been removed from the country, we must remain vigilant to fully verify that all of the Syrian regime’s weapons and its capacity to produce more are destroyed."

Last year in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Shaheen voted to give the President the authority to use military strikes to respond to the Syrian regime's use of chemical weapons on its own people. The Committee’s vote helped secure the international agreement that eliminated much of the regime's chemical weapons stockpile.
