Shaheen Statement on Confirmation of Merrick Garland as Attorney General of the United States
(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Chair of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee which funds the Department of Justice, issued the following statement after voting in favor of Merrick Garland to serve as Attorney General of the United States. Garland’s confirmation cleared the Senate by a vote of 70 to 30.
“As our nation’s top law enforcement official, the Attorney General of the United States is tasked with the immense responsibilities of ensuring our laws are enforced and justice is served through a fair and impartial process. Judge Merrick Garland is a brilliant legal mind, who throughout his extensive career on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, has demonstrated judicial independence and an unyielding commitment to justice. He has built a career in public service, rooted in the very principles that I believe make him supremely qualified to serve as Attorney General,” said Shaheen. “I voted in favor of Judge Garland’s confirmation this afternoon and look forward to working with him to address challenges that I believe must be top concerns for the Department of Justice, which include combating the rise of domestic terrorism, turning the tide of the substance use disorder epidemic and strengthening protections for survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Judge Garland’s deep respect and dedication to the mission of the Department of Justice – to ensure equal justice and the rule of law – will also go a long way in helping to restore public trust in our institutions. As our nation faces one of the most challenging periods in its history, I know Judge Garland will rise to the occasion and serve in his new role with honor and distinction.”
