Shaheen Statement on Congress’ Certification of Presidential Election Results
(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) released the following statement after Congress certified the results of the 2020 presidential election:
“Early this morning, Congress fulfilled its Constitutional duty and certified the results of the 2020 election, undeterred by the violent, un-American siege on the U.S. Capitol,” said Shaheen. “This was an insurrection spurred by President Trump and his enablers in Congress, who for months have perpetuated unfounded lies in an attempt to overturn the will of the American people. The peddling of these dangerous conspiracy theories and escalating political rhetoric incited the violence we saw yesterday that took an American life, reaped chaos in the halls of Congress and seared an image in the minds of people around the world about the state of America. This was a dark day that we will all remember and future generations must learn from.”
Shaheen continued, “The rancorous partisan politics must be put behind us so we can move forward together – our country and democracy demand it. In two weeks, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will be inaugurated and become the next President and Vice President of the United States of America. Our nation faces a number of pressing issues that require immediate action from its elected leaders, chief among them is to heal the divide that has torn our country apart and to continue our response to health and financial challenges created by COVID-19. There is no time to waste.”
