SHAHEEN STATEMENT ON EU’S HEZBOLLAH TERRORIST DESIGNATION
(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) released the following statement today in strong support of the European Union’s decision to designate the military wing of Hezbollah as a terrorist organization:
“Hezbollah’s military wing is a dangerous and destabilizing terrorist organization and I applaud the European Union for recognizing this fact. The EU’s move will condemn Hezbollah to further sanctions and carries the forceful message that the EU and the United States will not tolerate Hezbollah’s dangerous and destabilizing tactics. As the EU, the United States and our allies stand united in the fight against terrorism, it is my hope that other governments will follow the EU’s lead and crack down on Hezbollah’s terrorist and criminal activities.”
Shaheen, a member of both the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the Senate Armed Services Committee, has worked extensively to strengthen America’s national security. As the former Chair of the Foreign Relation’s Subcommittee on European Affairs, last year Shaheen joined a bipartisan effort calling on the EU to designate Hezbollah a terrorist organization. She was also an original cosponsor of a bipartisan resolution similarly urging the European Union to designate Hezbollah as a terrorist organization.
