Shaheen Statement on Federal Court Ruling Allowing Transgender Americans to Enlist

(Washington, DC) — Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) issued the following statement in response to the Pentagon’s announcement that it will allow transgender Americans to enlist in the military beginning January 1, 2018, following a federal judge’s ruling to allow the Obama-era policy to go into effect:

“This decision is a victory for our military readiness and upholds our values as a nation, rooted in equality and freedom,” said Senator Shaheen. “The Trump administration’s discriminatory efforts to prevent transgender Americans from honorably serving are unacceptable. Congress and this administration should be working together to ensure every American is equal under the law and that their civil rights are protected.”
