SHAHEEN STATEMENT ON NOMINATION OF SOLICITOR GENERAL ELENA KAGAN TO THE SUPREME COURT
(Washington, DC) - U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen today released the below statement following President Obama's nomination of Solicitor General Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court. Shaheen first met Kagan in 2005 when Kagan served as Dean of Harvard Law School and Shaheen served as Director of the Institute of Politics (IOP) at Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government. While at the IOP, Shaheen invited Kagan to speak to a group of students about women's leadership.
"Solicitor General Elena Kagan is widely regarded as a natural leader, a trailblazer, and one of our nation's top legal minds. She has earned the respect and praise of Democrats and Republicans alike for her temperament and integrity, and is a known consensus builder. Solicitor General Kagan has served the country well throughout her career as an educator and public servant, and I commend President Obama on this strong Supreme Court nomination. Just as Elena Kagan was swiftly confirmed with bipartisan support to serve as Solicitor General, I hope and believe the confirmation process in the Senate will be fair and expeditious."
