Shaheen Statement on Reports President Trump No Longer Intends to Support Legislative Effort to Reduce Gun Violence After Call With NRA
SHAHEEN: “It’s past time for Majority Leader McConnell to show leadership in the President’s absence”
(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) issued the following statement following reports that President Trump, after a phone call with the President of the NRA, is, once again, retreating from his commitment to work across the aisle to enact measures to reduce gun violence:
“President Trump and Congress have an obligation to the many victims of gun violence and their grieving families, to take steps to prevent the next mass shooting and protect the public from hate-fueled violence,” said Shaheen. “Americans across this country are tremendously worried that the next mass shooting could be in their community. Parents are terrified that their child’s school could be next. It’s past time for Majority Leader McConnell to show leadership in the President’s absence and allow common-sense legislation to be considered in the Senate. This is an area where we can make bipartisan progress if obstructionism is set aside.”
