SHAHEEN STATEMENT ON SALE OF GORHAM MILL

(Washington, D.C.) - U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen today released the following statement in reaction to the sale of the Gorham Mill to Northeast Papers:

"I am pleased that Fraser Papers has reached an agreement with Northeast Papers to sell the Gorham Mill.  It is critical that we get the Gorham facility up and running so that its workforce can get back on the job.  Just last week, I was able to speak with prospective mill ownership, Berlin and Gorham officials, as well as mill workers, and am heartened by their willingness to work together to ensure that the mill is operational in the very near future. 

"Earlier this year, I helped secure $1 million from the U.S. Economic Development Administration to help reduce the mill's energy costs, and I am pleased that this funding was helpful in attracting new ownership for the mill.   

"Fraser Papers has exemplified good corporate citizenship by working with community leaders and mill workers to find the best buyer, and I thank them for their efforts.  Today is a good day for the North Country, and I will work hard to ensure that we create more economic opportunity for the region in the weeks and months ahead."
