Shaheen Statement on SCOTUS Ruling on President Trump’s Travel Ban That Targets Muslim-Majority Nations
(Washington, DC) – Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s ruling to allow President Trump’s travel ban that targets travelers from Muslim-majority nations:
“This ruling allows a policy that is antithetical to American values and tramples on our founding principle of religious freedom enshrined in the First Amendment of the United States Constitution,” said Shaheen. “Protecting our national security is paramount but this policy only makes us less safe by reinforcing terrorist propaganda and recruitment. President Trump’s extreme policy will have broad ramifications, including blocking access to urgent medical care and upending educational exchanges that are particularly beneficial to our colleges and universities. America is better than this. Our nation’s policies should be based on our founding principles and long-term interests, not political opportunism and divisiveness.”
Senator Shaheen serves on the Senate Armed Services and Foreign Relations Committees.
