SHAHEEN STATEMENT ON SENATE CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM VOTE

Constitutional Amendment would allow Congress and States to regulate and set reasonable limits on campaign spending

(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) released the following statement after a Constitutional Amendment to allow Congress and States to “regulate and set reasonable limits on the raising and spending of money by candidates and others to influence elections” advanced in the Senate. The amendment expressly forbids any legislation that would impact or limit the freedom of the press.

“The American people lose when corporations and special interests can spend limitless dollars trying to sway public opinion and inject themselves in our democratic election process, and we have to take action on the secret money that is growing increasingly prevalent in campaigns. Dark money is taking over our political process, and accountability, transparency and credibility must be preserved in our democratic system. I urge my colleagues to vote for final passage of this Constitutional Amendment that will give us the ability to restore order to our political process.”
