Shaheen Statement on Senate Vote to Override President’s Veto on Legislation Blocking Saudi Weapons Sale
(Washington, DC)— U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), a member of both the Senate Foreign Relations and Armed Services Committees, issued the following statement after the Senate failed to override President Trump’s veto on bipartisan legislation to prohibit the administration from selling weapons to Saudi Arabia without Congressional approval.
“While these resolutions previously passed both chambers of Congress with bipartisan support, it’s incredibly concerning and disheartening that more Republicans couldn’t stand up to the President today to preserve Congressional oversite of serious matters of U.S foreign policy and to hold Saudi Arabia responsible for its contemptable behavior,” said Shaheen. “The Trump administration bypassed Congress to push this arms deal forward, and today the majority of Republicans in the Senate let him get away with it. There is bipartisan concern in the Senate for Saudi Arabia’s actions and I’ll continue to work across the aisle to ensure accountability for humanitarian violations and to preserve this legislative body’s constitutional role to provide oversight.”
