SHAHEEN STATEMENT ON SUPREME COURT CAMPAIGN FINANCE RULING

(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s ruling in McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission:

“I was disappointed by today’s Supreme Court decision. Just like the court’s Citizen United decision, this will give more power to millionaires and billionaires to control elections. With this decision, a single donor can give in total millions to party committees and federal candidates, drowning out the voices of average voters.”

Today’s court decision struck down key limitations on federal campaign contributions, eliminating the aggregate amount individuals can contribute to federal candidates and party committees. Shaheen has been vocal in her opposition to the Supreme Court’s Citizens United ruling and is a cosponsor of a constitutional amendment that would restore the power to limit campaign contributions.
