Shaheen Statement on Terrorist Attacks in Brussels

U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), the lead Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Europe and Regional Security Cooperation, released the following statement on the terrorist attacks in Brussels this morning. Shaheen is currently returning from Brussels and Estonia where she took part in a forum with North American and European leaders on transatlantic security challenges and held meetings with Estonian officials.

“I condemn in the strongest possible terms the attacks in Brussels earlier this morning. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and the Belgian people. The United States will continue to stand in solidarity with Belgium as it battles violent extremism. These attacks strengthen our shared resolve to defeat terrorism. If this attack was carried out by ISIS, it will reinforce the need to completely defeat this heinous terrorist organization. These attacks also underscore the continued need for close cooperation with NATO and the EU to improve our collective abilities to track down terrorists. Defeating terrorism cannot be done alone or in isolation.”
