Shaheen Statement on the President’s Plan to Close the Guantanamo Bay Detention Facility
(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) released the following statement after President Obama announced a plan that he’s submitting to Congress to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility:
“For far too long, the Guantanamo Bay Detention Facility has undermined our nation’s standing in the world and has served as a recruitment tool for terrorists. Last year, it cost the American taxpayer nearly a half billion dollars to house around 100 detainees. I believe we can and we must do better. Our country has a proven track record of trying terrorists, delivering the justice they deserve, and imprisoning them safely and securely. I look forward to reviewing the President’s plan and will continue to encourage Congress to work with the President to find a bipartisan alternative to Guantanamo.”
