Shaheen Statement on U.S. Airstrikes in Syria
(Washington, DC)— U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), a member of the Senate Armed Services and Senate Foreign Relations Committees, released the following statement on the airstrikes in Syria conducted by the United States:
“In 2013 when Bashar al-Assad used chemical weapons on his own people, I voted to support military action,” said Shaheen. “Since then, Assad’s brutality has continued unabated. His use of chemical weapons on innocent civilians has struck the moral conscience of the United States and the world. I’m supportive of the Trump administration’s decision to launch air strikes in response to Assad’s assault on his own people. Going forward, President Trump must explain to the American people what his strategy is to bring the broader Syrian conflict to a close and end the threat of terrorism that this conflict has fueled. Congress must also provide constructive oversight. Furthermore, this administration must be fully transparent with Congress and the American people regarding troop deployments to the battlefield."
