Shaheen Welcomes U.S. Sanctions on Individuals and Organizations That Threaten Ukrainian Stability and Security
Shaheen: “These targeted sanctions demonstrate that the United States stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Ukraine against Russian aggression.”
(Manchester, NH)— U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), the lead Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Europe and Regional Security Cooperation, welcomed the announcement by the Obama administration today that it will impose sanctions on specific organizations and individuals that are undermining stability in Ukraine. This announcement follows the recent decision by the European Union to extend its sanctions on Russia for at least another six months, which are pressuring Russia to fully implement the Minsk 2 agreement.
“Ukraine’s fight must continue to be our fight,” said Shaheen. “These targeted sanctions demonstrate that the United States stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the Ukrainian people against Russian aggression. We must remain vigilant in punishing those who are undermining peace in the region. And I applaud the decision by the European Union to renew its sanctions directed at Russia. The United States and our allies must send a strong, unified message that Putin’s reckless aggression will not be tolerated.”
In October, Senator Shaheen led a congressional delegation to Ukraine and was briefed by Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk and President Petro Poroshenko on the on-going aggression by Russia and its proxies. Senator Shaheen has been one of the strongest voices in Congress calling for U.S. support for Ukraine.
