SHAHEEN'S STATEMENT AFTER THE “TEST” VOTE ON COLLINS-HEITKAMP GUN REFORM MEASURE

(Washington, DC) — U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) delivered the following statement after voting in favor of a bipartisan gun reform bill to keep guns out of the hands of terrorists who are on the No Fly List or the Selectee List-subsets. The vote was scheduled by Republican leadership, purportedly to gauge support for the measure. The legislation was introduced by Senator Susan Collins and a group of bipartisan senators.

“This bipartisan proposal would make a small, but necessary, change to our gun laws,” said Senator Shaheen. “It’s appalling that there are not enough votes in the Senate to take this modest step to address gun violence. It’s long past time for Republican leadership to listen to the American people and reform our laws to keep dangerous weapons out of dangerous hands. It shouldn’t require lengthy filibusters and sit-ins to get their attention. Senator Collin’s legislation deserves a real vote, and this time, without Republican leadership meddling in the outcome. I will continue to urge Congress to work in a bipartisan way to pass meaningful gun reform legislation.”
