THURSDAY IN CLAREMONT: SHAHEEN TO HOST ROUNDTABLE WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS ON HEROIN EPIDEMIC

Earlier in West Lebanon Shaheen to Tour Novo Nordisk Facility

U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) will host a roundtable discussion with law enforcement officials on New Hampshire’s growing heroin and prescription drug epidemic in Claremont at 2:00 p.m. Shaheen and law enforcement will discuss ways to combat the heroin and prescription opioid abuse epidemic in New Hampshire while also highlighting the local consequences of a shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security at the end of February if Congress doesn’t pass legislation funding the agency through the remainder of the year.

Shaheen has supported federal investments to assist New Hampshire law enforcement and healthcare providers to fight what has become a top public health issue in the Granite State and urged Attorney General Eric Holder to take steps to partner with local officials to fight this epidemic. Last year, Shaheen announced the designation of Rockingham County as a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA), which will provide Rockingham County with additional resources to fight heroin trafficking and other illegal drugs as well as further the coordination and development of drug control efforts among local, state and federal officials. Earlier this month, Shaheen also reintroduced legislation to reauthorize a critical prescription drug monitoring program, the National All-Schedules Prescription Electronic Reporting (NASPER), to help local authorities better combat drug abuse and addiction.

Earlier, Shaheen will visit Novo Nordisk in West Lebanon Thursday, February 19 at 11:20 a.m. to tour the new facility and learn about the production of their product, the N8-GP that helps treat hemophilia. Following the tour Shaheen will host a press availability. Currently, Novo Nordisk employs 79 full time employees at its West Lebanon facility.

Media planning to attend should RSVP to Nick Brown at Nick_Brown@shaheen.senate.gov.
