THURSDAY: SHAHEEN TO CHAIR FOREIGN RELATIONS COMMITTEE CONFIRMATION HEARING

As Chair of the Subcommittee on European Affairs, Shaheen will chair the hearing to consider the nominations of Rose Gottemoeller and Philip Gordon

(Washington, D.C.) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen will chair a Senator Foreign Relations Committee hearing Thursday to consider the nominations of Rose Gottemoeller as Assistant Secretary of State for Verification and Compliance and Philip Gordon as Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs. Shaheen is Chair of the Subcommittee on European Affairs, which has jurisdiction over NATO, the European Union, Russia, Turkey, Kosovo, NATO efforts in Afghanistan, and energy security issues. Rose Gottemoeller has worked with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace since 2002, most recently as Director of the Moscow Center and a Senior Associate in the Russia and Eurasia Program. She is a former Deputy Undersecretary for Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation in the U.S. Department of Energy, and has held several other national security and nonproliferation positions in the government. Dr. Philip Gordon has served as the Senior Fellow for U.S. Foreign Policy at the Brookings Institution and was the founding Director of the Brookings Center on the United States and Europe. He previously served at the National Security Council as Director for European Affairs. These two posts are vital to U.S. national security interests. These nominees, if confirmed, will play a leading role in NATO, U.S.-Russian relations, nuclear non-proliferation, energy security, and more. The hearing comes at a critical time as the U.S. prepares to participate in the G-20 Summit in Europe on April 2nd, the NATO Summit in France and Germany, and as President Obama prepares for his first overseas trip to Europe at the end of March.
