TOMORROW IN DERRY: SHAHEEN TO HOST ROUNDTABLE WITH POLICE CHIEFS ON NEW HAMPSHIRE HEROIN AND PRESCRIPTION DRUG EPIDEMIC
In Manchester, Shaheen will meet with Manchester YouthBuild Program students
Tomorrow in Derry, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) will meet with local law enforcement, including police chiefs and sheriffs from Derry, Claremont, Hooksett, Bedford, Rochester, and Cheshire and Strafford Counties, at the Derry Police Department at 11:30 a.m. for a roundtable discussion on New Hampshire’s heroin and prescription drug addiction epidemic. Shaheen and law enforcement will discuss rising heroin and prescription opioid abuse in New Hampshire and ways to combat the epidemic.
Recently, Shaheen called for federal investments to assist New Hampshire law enforcement and healthcare providers to fight what has become a top public health issue in the Granite State and urged Attorney General Eric Holder to take steps to partner with local officials to fight this epidemic. She has also asked the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) to review a recently approved, controversial and potent narcotic that has generated concern about potential addiction and drug-related death risks associated with it. Tomorrow’s discussion in Derry will be Shaheen’s second roundtable on the issue this month.
In the afternoon, Shaheen will meet with students and supporters of the Manchester YouthBuild Program at a Manchester work site at 2:15 p.m. Shaheen will tour a two-family home students are currently helping build through the YouthBuild program, which is an education and job-training program for 18 to 24-year-old students who are looking to complete their high school diplomas. YouthBuild specializes in teaching students applicable job skills while they work together to build affordable housing.
