(Washington, DC)—U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) released a video today that shows how badly shoaling is occurring in Hampton Harbor and highlights the need for federal assistance to perform emergency dredging. The video contains aerial photos taken by the U.S. Coast Guard that shows how badly shoaling has impacted the Harbor. Last Friday in Hampton, Senator Shaheen was briefed by local stakeholders and the Army Corps of Engineers, and was given a boat tour to survey the shoaling.
In March, Shaheen led a letter from the New Hampshire delegation calling on the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director Mick Mulvaney and Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works R.D. James to include emergency dredging for Hampton Harbor in the OMB and the Corps’ fiscal year 2018 work plan. Shaheen has repeatedly called for the Corps to dredge Hampton Harbor, and recently secured language in a biennial water infrastructure bill that would permit emergency dredging for Hampton Harbor. In an Energy and Water Development Appropriations Subcommittee hearing last month, Senator Shaheen questioned Lt. Gen. Todd Semonite, the chief of engineers and commanding general of the Corps, about the Corps’ efforts and what can be done to prioritize dredging in small harbors like Hampton.
